February 2024

Greetings to Our Colleagues in Behavioral Health!

As we embrace the second month of the year 2024, February invites us to reflect on themes of love, resilience, and growth. Whether it’s celebrating Valentine’s Day with cherished loved ones or acknowledging Black History Month and its profound impact on our collective journey, this month offers a rich tapestry of experiences and opportunities for connection. This is a time to nurture our mental and emotional well-being and engage in discussions on personal and professional development. Join us as we navigate through this month with intentionality, compassion, and a spirit of curiosity.

This month we continue to expand our horizons as we delve into topics important to the Accreditors, CMS, Hospitals, Psychiatric Hospitals, Community Behavioral Health, and Human Services providers.

Starting this year, we are expanding our content to encompass insights and updates from additional behavioral health accreditors. We value your feedback on the newsletter. Please share your comments and tell us what you think. We would also like to hear about topics you’d like to see in future issues.

We look forward to hearing from you! Feel free to forward this newsletter to your colleagues, their perspectives are equally important to us.

Best Regards,

TIP OF THE MONTH

Recommendations for Documenting Medical Staff Appointments and Re-Appointments

An action on the list of potential appointees should be documented in the minutes of the committee assigned to that approval process. This documentation demonstrates the agreement of the committee regarding the list of potential appointees.

We recommend that the governing body meeting minutes include at least a list, could be an addendum, that lists all appointees, new privileges, reappointments, and renewal of privileges that are being recommended by the MEC for action by the board. The board considers and acts on the recommendation as a consent agenda item, or takes each action individually (not necessary) and that action to approve should be memorialized in the minutes presented at the next meeting. Of course, the board can take exception to a recommendation of the MEC and deny the appointment or privilege request, or send back for further investigation.
