CMS Post Survey Support

Healthcare professionals going through CMS post survey supportHas your psychiatric hospital received an adverse decision following a CMS survey? Did the surveyors find Condition level deficiencies? Did they cite Immediate Jeopardy?

These types of adverse outcomes are increasingly common for psychiatric hospitals. In several regions, we’re seeing an increase in CMS validation surveys following a hospital’s Joint Commission survey. CMS also surveys 100% of complaints they receive. Sometimes, these complaint surveys turn into full CMS surveys.

Immediate Jeopardy

CMS defines Immediate Jeopardy as “a situation in which the provider’s noncompliance with one or more requirements of participation has caused, or is likely to cause, serious injury, harm, impairment, or death to a resident.” When a hospital is advised of an Immediate Jeopardy finding during a CMS survey, it’s critical that the situation causing Immediate Jeopardy be resolved while the surveyors are still onsite.

Medicare Termination

If CMS identifies a Condition level deficiency during survey, CMS will notify the hospital they’re removing deemed status and placing the hospital under State Survey Agency jurisdiction. The next step may be to put the hospital on a 90 day Medicare Termination track. This outcome can potentially lead to the termination of Medicare funding for the hospital which is why CMS post survey support is so important.

CMS Resurvey

Evidence of Compliance

We work with your team to prepare for your CMS resurvey. At this stage, it’s critical for your hospital to show full compliance at time of resurvey.

Our CMS post survey specialists help you develop and organize the evidence you’ll provide to surveyors to show full implementation of your action plan. This includes evidence of:

  • Revisions to policies and procedures
  • Design and redesign of clinical documentation formats
  • Medical record audits
  • Staff education and training
  • Governing body review and approval of these actions

Your benefit: On day 1 of your resurvey, the surveyors get a crystal clear picture of how you’ve implemented your action plan. The evidence is there for them to see and your resurvey is off to a solid start.

Focused CMS Mock Survey

We conduct a focused CMS mock survey to prepare your managers and front line staff for your resurvey. Through our CMS post survey support service, we zero in on the areas cited by CMS and evaluate how well you’ve implemented your action plan.  We coach your staff on how to deal with surveyors and how best to present the patient care they provide.

Your benefit: You get a “dress rehearsal” of what your resurvey will be like. Your staff is confident about showing surveyors all the improvements you’ve made.
